Thank you for allowing us to feature La-D-Da today Lori! Would you mind telling us a little about your cross-stitch background?
Hi, thanks for asking me to join you today! I started cross stitching in the 80's when my children were small. In the late 90's I started looking through Vintage Sampler books
at the library. Those samplers were so inspiring to me, I wanted to try my hand at designing one. I designed a few using graph paper and scotch tape, but it took forever.
The computer sure made that part easier.
|
Have you noticed any major changes over the past few years in trends and what people are stitching?
I think stitchers are more sophisticated than ever! They appreciate beautiful linens and new threads and silks and seem to like classic designs.
|
You have a very nice and extensive collection of designs, most of which fall into the “primitive” genre. What influences in your life steered your designing tastes in this direction?
I really love the American Samplers from the 18th Century, and wonder about the girls that stitched them. Life now has so many more opportunities for young
women, yet there is a common thread between us all. Family, home, love, faith... Universal themes that bind all generations together.

New From La D Da...
Beauty Is
This nifty new design from La-D-Da has been a popular item since it came out last
month. The top right corner features the saying, "beauty is in the eye of the
beholder". This design has a stitch count of 137 x 137 and the model was stitched
on 36 count "Relic" by Picture This Plus. DMC or Needlepoint Silks may be used.
|
When you are beginning a new design, could you describe some of the key steps in the creation process?
I start with an idea, graph it on the computer (I use Patternmaker 'cause it's sooooo easy), then I choose the linen, and last the threads. I usually leave the idea
on the computer for awhile and keep checking on it and changing it. Since I stitch my own models, I have the freedom to change anything in mid-stream and usually do.

Would you tell us a little about your family?
My husband Bob is terriffic! I have a daughter Sara who is married with two wonderful daughters living only 6 blocks from me!! My son is married
and lives just outside Steven's Point in Wisconsin where he's a student studying physics, yikes!
|
What do you enjoy to do with your time when you’re not designing or stitching?
I enjoy gardening, bird watching and playing with my grandchildren.
|
In your opinion, what are some advantages to purchasing cross-stitch supplies at an independently owned local shop as opposed to a large chain store?
I love the excitement of a small shop. I've met such wonderful owners and employees that share their passion and advise. Private shops offer
stitching groups or classes that bring together stitchers from all skill levels and backgrounds creating friends forever. Did I mention the selections they offer?!!!
|
How long have you lived in Wisconsin and what are a few things you love about living there?
I have always lived in Wisconsin, My mom and 4 siblings all live in the same zip code we grew up in. So family and home are really important to us here. I love the changing
seasons and the small town feel where people say "hi" if you're just walking down the street. And Wisconsin is really beautiful.
|
What might the future hold for La-D-Da; do you intend to continue designing as long as you are enjoying it?
I love designing and stitching and think I'm just getting started. I meet the nicest people!!

Could you share a favorite recipe with us in closing?
I'll share my favorite birthday cake that I make every year. It's from my aunt Keen.
"Perfect Poppyseed Cake"
1 box generic white cake mix.
1/2 C. poppy seeds
1 box instant vanilla pudding
1/2 C. oil
4 egg whites
Frosting:
5T. Flour
1Cup milk
1/2 C. butter or margarine
1/2 Cup shortening
1 Cup sugar (granulated or powdered)
2t. vanilla
Combine poppy seeds with amount of liquid stated on cake mix box. Let stand overnight (optional). Combine cake mix,
poppy seeds, egg whites and vanilla pudding. Beat for 2 min. Add 1/2 Cup oil. Beat 2 more minutes. Bake in greased and floured 9 x 13 pan
for 30-40 min. at 350 degrees. Cool and frost.
Frosting: Combine flour with milk and boil until thick, stirring constantly. Let cool completely. Add 1/2 C. butter and beat well. Add remaining
ingredients and beat very well.
Neither the cake or frosting taste like much alone, but together, they're delicious!
