It’s a pleasure to have you as our Friday Feature this week Mary! Would you begin by telling us how long you’ve been in business and how you got started?
Hello, I’ve been designing cross-stitch charts for approximately 18-19 years. May path to cross-stitching was a little late. My mother taught me to sew when I was very small, about 7, and one of the methods was stamped cross stitch. I liked all forms of sewing, but had never come across counted cross stitch. In fact, as an adult, when I would see designs for this mode of stitching, I would wonder to myself, “…who would do this stuff…” And, one day, in my 20’s, I was looking for huck fabric and was told by a distributor to go to a specific cross stitch store.

My first thought was to wonder how anyone could make a living on this stuff. So I went, did not buy the hucktoweling but looked around the little shop and saw a pillow with shamrocks. I am half Irish so I was immediately attracted to it…..and I sought a sales person and asked if cross stitching was difficult….she said it wasn’t and immediately gave me a little “mushroom” cross-stitch kit.

Before I left the shop, I bought everything I needed for the pillow and from there, it’s history. I was immediately addicted, and within two weeks, returned to the shop and asked if they needed part-time help. They did, and for the next 2-3 years I worked on Saturdays at this wonderful little place, and probably spent my whole salary there as well.

Is there someone in your life that taught and mentored you as you were learning cross-stitch or did you rely on learning on your own?
My only mentoring came from going to a class at the cross stitch shop where I ended up working part time. I was advised to read and learn as much as I could. The owner, now deceased, was very encouraging with anyone who wanted to learn cross-stitch. So I learned a lot on my own and by asking questions of other shop owners and women (and sometimes, men) who I eventually met through the store.

Is there anything in particular that gives you inspiration for coming up with new designs?

Everything inspires me! Sometimes I see a photo in a magazine; a building, a steeple, a cluster of colors; the birth of a family member; a phrase or saying; my Irish, Italian and Cherokee heritage; or the desire to use a specific forum, e.g. pillow, bell pull….and sometimes an idea will just pop in out of nowhere. I recently returned from a visit to Ireland and am now on a Celtic kick….but I already have a few Irish designs out there, so my trip has made my love of Celtic design even stronger. I want to do justice to the designs and explain any relevant background information associated with each of these designs. Because I’m not an “artist” in the sense that I can sit down and draw…I think almost anyone can design as I do….pick something you love and chart it out. I love the whole process from beginning to end.

New From A. Fox Original...
Let It Snow

One of the more popular designs in our inventory is "Let It Snow..." by A Fox Originals. This beautiful collection of snowflake designs has a stitch count of 82h X 152W and retails for a suggested $8.00. Just looking at the snowflakes almost gives a sensation of chilly winter air as the summer comes to a slow close!

Outside of stitching, what are a few of your hobbies or pastimes?

Photography is a passion…just love it and am taking some courses. I have my camera with me about 90% of the time and love the memories associated with photographs. And I enjoy taking photos of things that most people consider a little crazy…..flowers (weeds!!) steeples, fences, etc. Once again, I love everything about photography and the processes of getting the picture I want, from climbing fences or mountains, to laying on the ground and wading in water….oh well, it could be worse.

I also love to read, and learn; to travel...and help people.

Would you share a little about your family?

I have been married for 21 years to my husband, Terry. We live in Camp Hill, PA and have a dog, Rico. We are both retired…Terry from the Department of Corrections and I am retired from the Pennsylvania State Police. I have two brother who still live in Pittsburgh with their wives, who are more like sisters than sisters-in-law; many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins galore.

Cross-stitch has had a few bad years of late and many shops and designers are finding it difficult to succeed. What do you think are a few keys to staying in business as a cross-stitch designer?

This is a tough one. If everyone would stay with cross stitch shops, who really know the stuff and how it works and how to help people, as opposed to the craft stores that sell “everything” and sometimes don’t know as much, and the trade shows open to the public, I know more stores would be in business. On the other hand, if you own a shop or designing is your livelihood, how can one criticize anyone for doing all they can to earn a living. That may sound like I’m on the fence, but I try to see both sides of a coin…I haven’t yet participated in “public” trade shows, but I know how tempting it can be.

Where are you originally from and where did you grow up?

I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA and moved to Harrisburg/Camp Hill, PA in 1979…and have been there ever since.

What’s your favorite time of the year?

My favorite time of the year is Spring, May particularly….I love seeing colors and flowers bloom and trees reborn.

Would you mind sharing a favorite recipe in closing?

Yes, I like to cook, but don’t like to spend too much time in any kitchen. So here’s one of my favorites:

Rice Casserole
¾ Stick of butter
1 Cup rice
1 Can Beef Broth
1 Can French Onion Soup.

Melt the butter; sauté the rice until it is light brown. Pour rice in a 2 quart casserole dish, add the two soups; mix, cover and place in a preheated 350 degree oven for 1 hour. It’s one of our favorite recipes.
