Carriage House Samplings

Designer's Name: Kathy Barrick-Dieter
Location: York, PA

Your cross-stitch line consists mostly of designs with a primitive flair and reproduction samplers. How and when did you develop an interest in this area of cross-stitch?
My interest in primitive and reproduction samplers actually started with an interest in antiques rather than cross stitch. Many moons ago, I wanted an antique sampler and couldn’t afford one, so I decided to make my own. And I guess I never stopped making them!

Your “Houses Of Hawk Run Hollow” and “Village Of Hawk Run Hollow” have been extremely popular and both seem to be very challenging pieces. What sort of feedback have you received on these patterns and do you plan to release any more “Hawk Run” designs?
The response to both of the Hawk Run Hollow pieces has been tremendous and I’m so grateful!! I do have plans for more Hawk Run Hollow designs. I’ve got two ideas, but nothing “on paper” yet.

You have some interesting photos of your house on your website. Can you give us some background on the house?

Our house was built in 1804. We’ve done a little research, but not enough yet. There are two possibilities regarding it’s history. The house has two front doors, which means it could be a Quaker house. Quaker houses were built with two front doors because the Quakers did not have churches and met a members’ homes instead. One door was used by women and the other by men. OR, the house was built as a tenant house for the house across the road from us.. We think this is a possibility because one of the front doors does not have a stone threshold as the other doors do. So, it’s possible this door started out as a window and was later made into a door. At one time, our property was connected to the property across the road.

The house is a definite work-in-progress. We’re restoring it slowly. It’s a labor-intensive project, but one that we enjoy. We had just finished restoring a house in Maryland when this house became available and we had been looking for a stone house in Pennsylvania for years, so we couldn‘t resist. But, this is definitely our LAST restoration project. When this house is done, we’re staying!

York, PA seems to be a very fascinating town! How long have you lived there and what do you enjoy most about living in York?

We’ve only lived in York for a couple years and are still learning it. I’m still used to living in Maryland where I knew every single town in every single county. Pennsylvania is HUGE and will take a long time to learn! One of the biggest advantages to living in PA is easy access to LOTS of antiques!! A short drive in any directions can prove very dangerous!!

Several of your new designs call for silk threads. In your opinion, what advantage do these silks provide for the finished piece as opposed to regular cotton floss?

Silk is such a joy to use! I started out stitching with cotton threads, but once I started using silk, it was very difficult to go back to cotton. And silk threads look wonderful in a sampler!

Outside of designing and stitching, what do you enjoy in the area of hobbies or interests?

My current favorite thing to do is making jewelry. My daughter, Liz, is a jeweler and has gotten me hooked. I love trying to find ways to make my jewelry look antique-y. I also enjoy antiquing, my dogs, decorating, working on our house and getting together with my friends.

How valuable is your website to your business?

I think my website is very valuable to my business. I get a lot of positive feed back and it’s a great way to keep stitchers informed of what’s coming, where I'm teaching and what I'm doing. And I LOVE posting photos stitchers send me when they’ve done one of my designs.

Could you tell us a little about your family and are they supportive of your designing career?

Although my husband, Art, is very supportive of my designing, he’s pretty much un-involved in my work as he works long hours and has a hefty commute. But he’s always willing to make a stop at the post office for me when I just can’t get there! My daughter is a huge help. She gives me the most honest feedback to new designs. If it really stinks, she won’t hesitate to tell me!! And that truly is invaluable. Liz is also willing to help with stuffing charts occasionally which is great - especially around Market times and she loves going to Markets with me.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Kathy! Do you have a favorite recipe you could share with us in closing?

I KNEW this question was coming!! I am SO not a cook. Every day I am e-mailed recipes from a cooking website. Sometimes I look at them and once in a while, I even print them. But I have yet to make a single one. Here’s a menu, rather than a recipe:

Steaks on the grill
Fresh tomatoes and corn on the cob from the garden.
How easy is that?!!
