There is very common link in many of your designs, something near and dear to our hearts…or in this case our stomachs! What gave you the idea of creating a series of designs focusing on delicious desserts and foods…is there a story behind the story?
What originally gave me the idea for desserts was that I wanted things to hang in the kitchen. And once I started one, the others followed right along. I would be driving along in my car and think to myself, “Carrot Cake Sampler! It could have raisins and nuts in it.” Also, my art instructors in school encouraged us to focus on a series when doing a project. I still use that philosophy and it works perfectly for the repetition of sampler stitches and also the dessert series themselves.

Would tell us a little bit about your family?
We’re a military family currently stationed in England. We’ve got a darling daughter, Isabella, as well as another little girl on the way—due in September. I’m a work-at-home mom and when I’m not watching SpongeBob SquarePants with my daughter, I dabble in cross stitch design.

I understand your family recently moved from Japan to England. How did the move go from a business standpoint and have you made any cross-stitch related contacts since arriving in England (i.e.: shops, stitching circles, etc.)?
From a business standpoint, the move was very hard. Things were in shipment for a very long time, so things basically stopped for a few months. I feel like after four months, I’m finally in the swing of things again. No new cross stitch contacts here as of yet, but I’m still exploring. I’m currently working on an “England Sampler” that I hope does well at the shops and bazaars here.

Do you have any interests or hobbies outside of cross-stitch?
I like painting, gardening, reading, and movies. I’m into romantic period dramas at the moment--if it involves women wearing corsets and speaking with a British accent, then it’s on my list.

Casey Buonaugurio Designs presents...
Pink Plaid Pear
The newest tasty treat from Casey Buonaugurio makes a fantastic addition to her
selection of designs. Pink Plaid Pear has a stitch count of 38w X 123h, uses DMC
floss and the model (shown) was stitched on 14 ct light yellow Aida. At a suggested
retail price of only $6.00, this will spruce up your summertime kitchen decor without
taking a bite out of your pocket book!

Where are you originally from and where did you grow up?
I was born in Kansas and my family moved around a lot when I was growing up. My dad was a construction worker, so we were always on the go. I spent my adolescence in Wyoming, so that’s where I usually tell people I am from. It was a small coal mining town of about 100 people in southwest Wyoming.

Your designs are always so eye appealing as the thread and fabric selections fit right in to the theme of each design, providing a very nice contrast. Do you spend a lot of time selecting materials or just pick the obvious fit for whatever you’re working on?
Thank you. I usually have an idea of what fabric I want for a project and order it well in advance. I always try to stick with a color in keeping with the “flavor” of the design. I like the hand-dyed fabrics and those take a while to come in. When picking fabric, I always try to remember that each floss color needs to stand out from it. I usually go for medium tones, that way the light colors and dark colors can be seen and no color disappears into the fabric color. I’ve only recently started using over-dyed thread in my newest samplers. I love their look and think I’ll do a lot more of those.

How long have you been stitching and what made you first decide to try and create a design of your own?
I’ve been stitching about 5 years now—self-taught. I had ordered a computer stitching software CD just to try it out, and from then on, I was hooked.

How important a role does your website play in your design business?
I think it’s a great tool. I can tell stitchers directly about what’s new and when the designs are set to come out. What’s also great about it is that I can put my web address on charts, which leads stitchers to my website to check out designs of mine they may not have seen before.

Your designs have been very well received by the cross-stitch world. What does the future hold for Casey Buonaugurio Designs and where do you see your business ten years from now?
I have no idea what I will be designing. This month I plan to release my “Taco Sampler” which is already branching out from the dessert series. That’s what’s fun about designing, each one leads to an idea for a new one. I think I will stick with the dessert series for quite a while though. I’ve got so many dessert ideas in my head and they are looking to get out.

Would you mind opening up Casey’s cookbook and sharing a favorite recipe?
This is a Christmas favorite of my family’s, but it would do great in the summer also for guests. It’s a recipe from my mom’s Aunt Shirley. So I guess I’ll call it “Aunt Shirley’s Cheese Ball.”
Aunt Shirley’s Cheese Ball
1 8oz. package of cream cheese
½ cup chopped pecans
½ cup chopped onions
Few drops of lemon juice
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
¼ cup milk
Dried parsley flakes
Mix cream cheese, pecans, onions, lemon juice, cheddar cheese, milk. Form into a ball (it will be messy) and put in a bowl and refrigerate overnight. Once ball has set up overnight, roll in parsley flakes to coat. (Use pecans if you prefer.) Serve on crackers.
