How long has Tiny Modernist been in business and how did it get started?
I’ve been open since early 2008, when I started with just 2 patterns in my online shop. They were simple designs of modern chairs, and they sold so well I was inspired to make more designs. Now there are over 100 patterns available!

What are a few things you feel make Tiny Modernist unique?
I try to create a blend of traditional needlecraft with a modern lifestyle, so my patterns are bold, graphic, and bright, often inspired by mid century modern and retro themes. They are also fun and inviting, and simple to stitch.

You have a very nice “how to” section on your website. How important is teaching cross-stitch to others?
It’s very important. Cross stitching is such a rewarding hobby, and it’s one of the easiest types of needlepoint to learn. It’s also a traditional technique that I believe should be passed down and kept alive by teaching it to others.

How do you think the internet could be used to play a larger role in teaching cross-stitch?
Well, I guess a nice “how-to” section is a start! Eventually, I’d like to make some videos on my website that show how to do basic and more advanced cross stitch techniques. I’ll let you all know when those get posted. I also think that with social media sites, it’s much easier to find out how to get started with cross stitch, or to find advice if you do need help.

New: Raccoon With Chevron & Anchor With Chevron

Brand new this week at Hoffman Distributing, these two popular chevron patterns are a follow-up to the best selling Elephant With Chevron in our catalogue (see link below). The Raccoon is 107w x 121h and the Anchor is 91w x 95h.

The graphs are clear and crisp and make stitching these unique designs a joy for the beginning or seasoned stitcher!

What do you enjoy about cross-stitching on a personal level? On a business level?
As most stitchers know, stitching up a design (especially a large one) is a labor of love, and I still get a sense of pride and satisfaction whenever I finish a new piece. On a business level, I love being able to share my designs with others and, because patterns are all do-it-yourself, everyone can take pride in their own work, too.

What is your personal stitching background?
My mom taught me to stitch when I was quite young but I never really had patience for it until I was much older. When I decided to take up stitching again, I couldn’t find many cross stitch patterns that I liked, and that was when I decided to start making my own patterns. I like stitching pieces that have no more than 12-15 colors, and are a nice size to work (my average pattern area is about 4” x 6” or 5” x 7”). And I especially like bright colors- some of my favorites are DMC Teal 3846, Orange 741, Lime 906, and Pink 604.

What do you enjoy (hobbies or interests) outside of cross-stitch?
I love baking cookies, dabbling in leather carving (so far I’ve made a wallet, 2 belts, and a purse!) and playing violin with my husband (who plays guitar).

What are your three favorite movies ever?
The Indiana Jones Trilogy (I guess that’s 3 movies, but they’re so good)
12 Monkeys (I’m such a fan of Terry Gilliam movies)
When I was a kid, my favorite movie was Labyrinth (David Bowie is awesome as the Goblin king)

Does your family play a role in Tiny Modernist?
My 3-yr old and 5-yr old daughters are used to seeing mommy “doing her cross stitch”. They like to “help” sometimes by pulling the needle through the aida cloth, and my youngest daughter likes to play around in MacStitch, drawing pink pixels all over the grid. My whole family is very supportive, because I work from home. My husband is very patient about my odd working hours (after the kids are asleep) and also gives me very good business advice!

Where do you see your business in 10 years?
Still Stitching! I absolutely love what I do and hope to have you all stitching along with me.
